_FLORA Y FAUNA
Throughout this cycle of work, Nina Surel explores the ideas around modern-day womanhood. Young women are dressed in old-fashioned clothes made of applied precious jewels and porcelain flowers and birds, as they stand in fantastic, wall-paper-like landscapes. Most are holding an object, sometimes quite desperately, as if aware of the fragility of possession. The objects vary from small animals to musical instruments, each imbued with a particular symbolism – everything from personal liberation and sexual freedom to family and home & hearth.
By the end of this cycle, Surel presents us with strong and energetic women, at the pinnacle of their own womanhood, centered in the picture plane, looking straight at the viewer, and in complete control.
